The New Mexico Department of Health's (NMHealth) mission is "To ensure health equity, we work with our partners to promote health and well-being and improve health outcomes for all people in New Mexico." This position operates within the Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) Program of the Environmental Health Epidemiology Bureau (EHEB), Center for Health Protection (CHP), Public Health Division (PHD) in NMHealth. Why does the job exist? This position will serve as the lead data strategist for the New Mexico Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) Program as well as the Community Health Systems Epidemiology Bureau (CHSEB). Specifically, this position will: 1) serve as the liaison with data stewards to access data, manage datasets, and coordinate data analyses; 2) develop documentation of data science workflow; 3) act as gatekeeper for the NMTracking and NM-IBIS portals. The incumbent will also staff the EHEB on-call line at least one day per month. How does it get done? 1) Serve as the liaison with data stewards to access data, manage datasets, and coordinate data analyses. Oversee data flow for many content areas and streamline the current process. 2) Document data science workflow of programming, data sources, database relations, and data dictionaries so the work may be reproducible and usable by colleagues. 3) Manage the current IBIS-PH platform and contribute to the IBIS project determining and implementing the next iteration of NM-IBIS and NMTracking portal(s), including anticipating future data sources and visualizations (e.g., near real-time data on portal via API). 4) Support EHEB's mission by providing on-call services one or two days a month, supporting emergency preparedness for environmental exposures, and conducting surveillance of, and response to, acute environmental health events. Who are the customers? The data displayed on NMTracking and NM-IBIS are used by internal and external epidemiologists and public health practitioners and leadership, academic researchers and students, health care practitioners and administrators, policy makers, other state agencies, and the general public to better understand health outcomes and ultimately improve New Mexicans' health. Ideal Candidate - Experience with SAS and R statistical software packages for epidemiological analyses - Experience managing multiple large datasets - Detail oriented Minimum Qualification Master degree in Epidemiology, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Economics, Health Informatics or related Master's degree field as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Working Conditions Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, stooping, bending, reaching, and lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds may be required. Some travel with occasional overnight stay may be required.
